Drei Rahmen, drei Reichweiten

Three frameworks, three ranges

Seit die Einspeisevergütung unter dem Strompreis liegt, entscheidet nicht mehr die Anlage über die Wirtschaftlichkeit, sondern der Weg, den der Strom nimmt. Der Gesetzgeber hat dafür drei Rahmen geschaffen. Sie unterscheiden sich vor allem darin, wie weit der Strom reichen darf — und was das an Pflichten, Kosten und Ertrag nach sich zieht.

Since feed-in tariffs fell below retail electricity prices, profitability is no longer decided by the array but by the route the electricity takes. German law provides three frameworks for this. They differ above all in how far the electricity may travel — and in the obligations, costs and returns that follow from that.

§ 42a EnWG

Bewohner desselben Gebäudes, ohne Weg über das öffentliche Netz

Residents of the same building, without using the public grid

Der Betreiber wird zum Stromlieferanten und versorgt die Bewohner vollständig, einschließlich des Reststroms aus dem Netz. Höchster Ertrag je Kilowattstunde, dafür Lieferantenpflichten, Vollversorgungspflicht und ein anspruchsvolles Messkonzept.

The operator becomes an electricity supplier and covers the residents' full demand, including residual power drawn from the grid. The highest return per kilowatt-hour, but it brings supplier obligations, a duty of full supply and a demanding metering concept.

Parties within the same building, without using the public grid

Der erzeugte Strom wird nach einem festen Aufteilungsschlüssel im Gebäude verteilt, ohne Vollversorgung. Deutlich schlankere Vertrags- und Abrechnungspflichten als beim Mieterstrom, dafür ohne Mieterstromzuschlag.

The electricity generated is distributed within the building according to a fixed allocation key, without full supply. Contract and billing obligations are considerably leaner than under Mieterstrom, but the Mieterstrom subsidy does not apply.

Customers in the region, via the public grid

Der Strom verlässt das Grundstück und geht an Haushalte oder Betriebe in der Umgebung. Damit steht erstmals nicht nur das eigene Gebäude als Absatzmarkt zur Verfügung, sondern die Nachbarschaft. Netzentgelte und Abgaben fallen an, und beide Seiten brauchen ein intelligentes Messsystem.

The electricity leaves the property and goes to households or businesses nearby. For the first time the market is not confined to your own building but extends to the neighbourhood. Grid fees and levies apply, and both sides need a smart metering system.
